POI device — Point-of-Interaction device

A point-of-interaction (POI) device is the hardware that captures payment card data through direct physical interaction with the card — a terminal, PIN pad or card reader.

What it means in practice

PCI DSS Requirement 9.5.1 requires an up-to-date POI device list, periodic tamper and substitution inspection, and trained personnel.
PTS POI approval is a separate PCI SSC device programme; some SAQs require devices to be on the PCI-listed approved PTS POI list.
